Fast acting Stendra: New FDA approved drug for erectile dysfunction
Quick onset of action is important to men,Dr. Ira Sharlip, a urology professor at UC San Francisco, and former president of the International Society for Sexual Medicine , told ABCNews.com. In an interview Thursday, on the eve of the FDA decision, Sharlipsaid Stendra likely wouldappeal more to ED sufferers whose opportunities for sexual activity are more casual, than to thosewho have sex on a more predictable basis. Clinical trial resultswith more than 1,200 men indicated that Stendra alsoclears the body more quickly than the other ED drugs in the same class, according to data submitted to the FDA. In a Phase II study, Stendraworked as well as Viagrawhile producing less low blood pressure in cardiac patients who take nitroglycerin . In the two Phase III trials that compared Stendrawith a placebo, there were no reports of blue vision or prolonged, painful erections (priapism),which are infrequent side effects associated with Viagra. In rare cases, men taking any of the PDE5 drugs have reported sudden decreases in hearing or loss of hearing. Any patient who experiences sudden loss of hearing or vision while taking any of the PDE5 drugs should call a doctor right away, the FDA said. Sharlip said he didnt believe that those rare side effectsmatter much to most patients. Despite what the FDA says, I have never seen priapism from any PDE5 inhibitor drug. Priapism is just not a clinical problem. Blue vision with Viagra is uncommon and at worst annoying.

FDA approves new drug for erectile dysfunction
Vivius conducted clinical trials that included more than 1,200 men with erectile dysfunction to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Stendra at all dosage strengths (50 mg, 100 mg, and 200 mg). Significant improvement in erectile function was observed for all doses in Stendra-treated patients compared to placebo. The pill is taken 30 minutes before engaging in sexual activity. This approval expands the available treatment options to men experiencing erectile dysfunction, and enables patients, in consultation with their doctor, to choose the most appropriate treatment for their needs, noted Victoria Kusiak, MD, deputy director of the Office of Drug Evaluation III in the FDAs Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. PDE5 inhibitors such as Stendra may rarely cause color vision changes. In rare instances, men taking PDE5 inhibitors have reported a sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes. Sudden loss or decrease in hearing has also been reported in patients taking PDE5 inhibitors. Patients who experience a sudden loss of vision or hearing should stop taking PDE5 inhibitors, including Stendra, and call a physician right away. The most common side effects reported in more than 25 of patients in the clinical studies of Stendra include headache, redness of the face and other areas (flushing), nasal congestion, common cold-like symptoms (nasopharyngitis), and back pain. In rare cases, patients taking Stendra and other PDE5 inhibitors may get an erection lasting four hours or longer that will not go away (priapism). If this happens, patients should seek immediate medical attention.
